Fine-Tune your Focus

Professional level cameras like the Nikon D3 and D300 that I use have the ability for fine-tuning the focus parameters of each lens. I just spent all day yesterday re-calibrating every lens to every camera body combination. It was a chore. But now all my glass will be at peak sharpness as we head into wedding season. J

Samantha Stosur Family Circle Cup Stadium Banner

World No. 8 and defending champion Samantha Stosur has officially entered the 2011 Family Circle Cup. Stosur, the first player to commit to the tournament, returns to Daniel Island where she set the event’s mark for the fastest championship victory on record by defeating Vera Zvonareva 6-0, 6-3, in just 52 minutes. Marking the tournament’s 39th consecutive year, the Family Circle Cup, a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Premier event, will be held April 2-10, 2011 at the Family Circle Tennis Center in historic Charleston, South Carolina.

Samantha Stosur, the 20th champion in the Family Circle Cup’s storied history, said, “I’ve always enjoyed competing in Charleston, and I really look forward to defending my title at this historic event. The city is beautiful and the fans are very knowledgeable, so it’s always exciting to play this tournament.” She added “Winning the Family Circle Cup has certainly been an important highlight of my career”.

As one of the Official Photographers of the Family Circle Cup, I’m always honored when one of my images is selected for the Stadium Banner!!! This shot was taken on a rooftop overlooking the Charleston city skyline during a private photography session Samantha granted us after winning the title. I used a Nikon D3 with 70-200VRI. Since she was back-lit by the sun, I used an SB-800 off to my left to light her and placed a second one behind her to add a little bling to the trophy. Flashes were triggered via RadioPoppers and a camera-mounted SB-900 in commander mode.

Photo Guest Books

Last year Cami & I started offering Photo Guest Books to our brides and grooms. We can’t BELIEVE what a huge hit they have become!!! These beautiful coffee-table books are printed on fine-art silk paper, containing each couple’s favorite images from any of their Signature Shoots...like The Proposal, their Engagement Sesssion, or the Bridal Shoot. Each page has space around the images where guests can sign the book, leave fun comments, or write a few words of wisdom. Folks just love looking through all the pictures, often passing the book around the reception. And the couple loves all the personal comments and well-wishes that make the book a very special keepsake instead of just the generic guest book with blank lines as a record of all who attended. It’s a win-win and we love being a part of that!

Australian Open: Vera Zvonareva & Caroline Wozniacke are Out

Last year at the Family Circle Cup, Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva were locked in a semi-final battle when Caroline slipped and twisted her ankle…a very scary moment for ANY athlete. But she recovered quickly and both players had an excellent 2010. This year at the Australian Open, Caroline came in ranked #1 and Vera was #2!!! They’ve both played some exceptional tennis throughout this first Grand Slam of the year. So I was pretty sure they were going to be our finalists!!! But Na Li, who has been on fire in 2011, and Kim Clijsters, who’s always a tough competitor, had other plans for the top seeds. Yup, I’m sad to say Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva are out of the 2011 Australian Open Tennis Championships.

ALL THINGS NIKON with Mark Suban at CCforP

Many thanks to the incredibly knowledgeable Mark Suban from Nikon Professional Services for teaching the “All Things Nikon” Seminar yesterday! It was held at the Charleston Center for Photography, graciously hosted by Stacy Pearall & Andy Dunaway. We really drilled down into the dark recesses of our menu systems, and talked about the myriad of tools and settings at our disposal in these amazing cameras to help us make the most use of them and get the best images in every situation! Plus of course it’s always fun to play with the latest new lenses and accessories that are out. J

(Some of these were shot on my new Nikon Coolpix P-7000, which I love! Others were shot with one of my D3s and either the 50mm f1.4G or the 14-24 f2.8.)

Portfolio Head Shots

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of meeting Walt Dunlap. He’s done quite a bit of stage acting in his career and is looking to re-focus on the TV/Film industry. OOPS!

I love shooting reflections in mirrors, through natural vignettes, and with unique angles throughout the course of covering a wedding. Here’s one time where I made a booboo and caught myself in the shot. J It was taken during Alexis & Nick’s beautiful wedding at St. Luke’s Chapel. Fortunately I was able to crop myself out during editing so that the focus remained on Alexis and her bridesmaids. I realized my error as soon as I shot it though…and re-composed so that the rest of the shots I made in that mirror didn’t include my ugly mug. J Hey, we all make mistakes!

Separation for High-Key Backgrounds

The best way to get a pure white, high-key background, is to separate the subject from the background and light it independently. That way you can control the light falling on the background separately from the light falling on the subject. I routinely expose the background at a stop or two higher than your subject to get that super white look.

Here’s the setup for a shoot I did for Anchor Commercial recently. I set up my Savage White Seamless background in their lobby. Two SB-800 flashes were aimed at the background and gobo’d so as not to spill onto my subject, Lindsey. She was lit independently by two more SB-800 strobes as master and fill lights. All four were controlled via an SB-900 on my D3 in Commander mode, and triggered via Radio Poppers. I shot with my favorite 14-24 f2.8 mounted to the D3 and stood on a chair to create that elongated look they were going for in this image.

Super Lawyers Magazine

Super Lawyers Magazine is a nationwide publication catering to the world of law. As their photographer for South Carolina, I enjoy photographing a number of interesting shoots each year. The other day I had the honor of photographing Gedney Howe. As lawyers go, Mr. Howe certainly needs no introduction…his reputation in the industry speaks for itself. A native of Charleston, Mr. Howe began practicing with his father in 1973 and has been focusing on representing plaintiffs in personal injury litigation as well as criminal defense litigation ever since.

My good friend and fellow photographer, David Strauss, assisted me on this shoot. All images were shot with the Nikon D3 and either the 14-24mm f2.8 or 24-70mm f2.8 lens. Lighting was provided by either 1 or 2 Nikon SB-800 strobes, on Bogen stands, with Westcott umbrellas, controlled by an on-camera SB-900 in commander mode, and triggered by my trusty Radio Poppers.

Alexis & Nick's First Kiss!

Last weekend Alexis and Nick had their FIRST KISS! They are both in the military, stationed in Germany. And when they met, they knew early on there was something special between them. So they decided to start a relationship with the intention of marriage. And part of that covenant they made with each other included keeping themselves pure before God and saving their first kiss until their wedding day. I absolutely LOVE that!!! Their ceremony was truly Spirit-led and such an honor to be a part of!

They were married at St. Luke’s Chapel with their reception following at The Summer House. After the ceremony, we stopped at Cannon Park and White Point Gardens for some dramatic images in the setting sun. Anatomy of a Bridal Portrait

OK, here’s the portrait Sarah selected and the scene I was working with. I moved the poinsettias at the base of the stairs and placed Sarah where she could comfortably rest her elbow on the bottom of the banister. She was lit by three Nikon SB-800 flashes. One was directly behind her, pointed at her back to give her that glow, also known as a rim light. One was placed above and to camera- left on the stairs to give depth and dimension to the staircase, and also act as a bit of a hair light on Sarah. The last one is on camera right shooting through a 43” Westcott umbrella for a nice soft main light, in a loop lighting pattern. The image was shot with a Nikon D3 with the 70-200 f2.8 lens. I wanted to compress the background, so I actually opened the front door and stood out on the porch (shooting through the door) so that I could use the telephoto end of the lens. All flashes were controlled by an SB-900 on the camera in Commander Mode, and triggered with RadioPoppers. I had an AWESOME time photographing Sara…what a beautiful bride!

Bridal Shoot at the Governer Thomas Bennett House

Bridal Shoots are usually done months before the wedding. And since most brides want to keep the details of their wedding gown a secret from the groom, I can’t really go posting their pictures to the web after the shoot! So I thought I’d go back in time and showcase a couple recent Bridal Shoots. Sarah’s portraits were scheduled for a park in downtown Charleston on December 14th. But it was FREEZING cold, windy, and ugly outside. Her wedding to Trent (seen here) was coming up on January 1^st. So we didn’t have any wiggle room to reschedule! But Linda at the Governor Thomas Bennett House was so kind and generous in letting us use their beautiful and historic building to shoot in. Terri & Danny open a New Door

Sarah & Trent at Wide Awake Plantation

Sarah & Trent’s wedding last weekend was a deeply spiritual event. You could just FEEL the presence of God in that place! They were married underneath a giant oak tree overlooking the Stono River at Wide Awake Park, the original site of Wide Awake Plantation. Cami & I got to know Sarah and her family during our time at Ashley River Baptist, where they all attend. She’s going to USC and studying journalism. (We were thrilled to loan her a film camera for one of her photography classes.) Trent graduated from Clemson. (I’m not sure exactly how THAT works.) J They went on a mission trip to India together. And he proposed around Valentine’s Day.

Some of the unique things I loved about their wedding include: the beautiful array of colors for the bridesmaids dresses; the peacock feathers in boutonnières, the flower girl’s basket, the reception tables, and the wedding cake; the candle jars for the unity candle, the moss pillow for the ring bearer, the prayer requests at each food station for the different people groups around the world, the contra dancing lessons at the reception, the throwing of spices instead of bird seed at their departure. Last Photo Shoot of the Year

It’s the beginning of a new year. So what better way to celebrate the close of 2010 than to share some of my favorite images from my last shoot of the year. On the last day of the year, indeed during the last hour of daylight, I was out at the beach doing what I love doing most! J I have photographed Elise and her family before. And I can say she is one of my FAVORITE little models. It was chilly and windy out on my favorite stretch of Folly Beach. But Elise (and her Mom & Dad who joined in on a few shots) was a real trooper! We had a great time and closed the year with some really fun images.

Coastal Cardiology

I had a SUPER EARLY photo shoot a few weeks back for Coastal Cardiology. It was one of those days that was absolutely FREEZING here in Charleston. I had to be on-site at 6:30am to set up and photograph the exterior of their building in that pre-dawn light that gives the sky that dramatic blue color and makes the interior look so warm and inviting. I set up three SB-800 flashes with full CTO gels on them to light up the building. Then, bundled up like an Eskimo, I waited by my tripod for the light to be just right. I shot with my Nikon D3 (set to tungsten white-balance to give the sky that saturated blue) with a 14-24 f2.8 lens.

After I got my shot, I went in and set up for head shots of all the doctors. These had to be completed before patients began arriving at 7:45! I decided to use a giant 36” shoot-through umbrella, for the main light, with two SB-800s firing through it. I placed a white light-disc on the opposite side for fill. In the past, I might have used a main light and a fill light. But I’ve really been liking the effect of my new head-shot lighting set up because it produces only ONE catch-light in the eye. If I use a main light AND a fill light, this produces TWO catch-lights…not quite as natural looking. A third SB-800 provided a hair light to complete the look I wanted. All the head-shots were done with my D3 mounted to the 70-200 f2.8. All the flashes were triggered by an SB-900 in Commander Mode only, via RadioPoppers. Enjoy!

Giant Diffusion Wall

Earlier this month I headed over to our FAVORITE dentist’s office to do some holiday team photos for them. We’ve been going to Hilton Dental for quite a while and just LOVE how well they take care of us!

Their office has this really cool translucent wall of glass bricks separating two of the work stations. So I decided to put it to use. For the first shot, I placed two SB-800 strobes with blue gels behind the wall to give me a friendly blue glow to contrast with their red Santa hats. Then I took the gels off the flashes and increased the power so they would give me a giant wall of soft diffused light as my main light source for the shot with Dr. Hilton in the dentist’s chair. I photographed everything using the Nikon D3 and 24-70mm f2.8 with an SB-900 on-camera in Commander Mode. The two SB-800s were triggered with my trusty RadioPoppers.

Even though I always carry plenty of umbrellas, soft boxes, and other light modifiers…sometimes it’s better to work with what you have in the environment around you!

Matt & Brittany do some Modeling

Every now and then I get to work with a really AMAZING couple that really “clicks” with my personality and fun style of photography. Matt & Brittany are just such a couple! They’re just dating. But Matt knew Brittany LOVED the camera. So for Christmas he secretly got her a fun portrait session with me. As it turns out, the camera LOVED her back…and him too. Aren’t they just stunning together?!? I mean these guys could be doing some serious modeling! Matt is in the Navy and Brittany is in medical school. We really had a lot of fun walking around town…and got lucky with a dramatic sunset to end our session with.

Costello Family Christmas

High-Purity Standards

Many moons ago, Cami & I worked for a wonderful company called High-Purity Standards. They are a global manufacturer of single and multielement standards for the calibration of analytical instruments. The company, under the leadership of Dr. Rains and his daughter, Connie, has continued to grow and prosper. They’ll be moving into a new larger facility soon. And they needed some new images for their website. It was so much fun going back to shoot for them, and getting to see our old friends and colleagues. Here are a few images from the shoot. All photos were shot with a Nikon D3 with wireless light provided by multiple SB-800 and SB-900 flashes.

The Bessingers (Part Deux)

Well last week I finally got to meet his brother, Tommy, and have the pleasure of photographing the “other” Bessinger brother with his children. Rian has been attending Bible College in Australia and was home for the holidays. So this was the perfect opportunity. I had a great time hanging out with her and her brother, Drew, as we explored some of my favorite “Charleston Charm” sections of downtown.

Ashley & Jason at the French Huguenot Church

A few months ago I photographed Ashley’s Bridal Shoot at the Old Sheldon Church Ruins. Then she changed and we met up with Jason at his grandmother’s house not far away for their Engagement Session. Both of their shoots were some of my FAVORITES from the entire year. We had so much fun exploring and experimenting and really came away with some fun shots. So I KNEW their wedding was going to be a BLAST!!!

Ashley & Jason were married last weekend at the historic French Huguenot Church in downtown Charleston. I met up with the guys at the Double Tree Inn, where we got some cool shots in and around the area, including down by The Market. Then I headed over to the church hall at 44 Queen where the girls were getting ready. It was dusk by then, so I was able to use a lot of neat creative lighting techniques to get some great shots of them. Ashley had seen a shot I had taken at this church once before where I hid a remote camera in the choir loft shooting back at the congregation. She’d asked me to do the same for her, so after finishing with the girls I went and set that up. The shots turned out great! The ceremony was wonderful with Jason’s brother, Daniel, performing the honors. Then it was off to The Citadel Alumni Center for a rockin’ party with the Blue Dogs band! Human Rights Day

While the folks from Falling Whistles were in town, we photographed conceptual images for use in this Human Rights Day campaign. I thought it would be fun to show you the progression from early photographic concept to final rendition after going through full retouching and graphic artistry. We had a great time getting to know the folks from the team and I truly hope you’ll read the message and become a whistle blower for peace. Human Rights Day is only two days away! We in this country are so blessed to have the freedoms and creature comforts we so readily take for granted. Let’s not forget many are still fighting for the basic right to live at peace!

Falling Whistles

A few weeks ago, Cami & I hosted the amazing team from Falling Whistles as they made their stop in Charleston along their Nationwide Tour designed to elevate the conversation in this country about the war in Congo. Wait, there’s a war in Congo?

The Democratic Republic of Congo (the country I was born in) is home to our world’s deadliest war since WWII. Over the last decade more than 6 million people have died, and nearly 1,500 people continue to lose their lives daily. Sexual violence is more rampant here than anywhere else in the world, and thousands of children are involved in the war. Why?

There are a number of reasons, dating back over a century. The conflict has been tied directly to the country’s vast natural resources. They are both a blessing and a curse, making Congo a country of great potential and a frequent victim of exploitation.

The Falling Whistles campaign launched with a simple response – make their weapon your voice and be a whistleblower for peace in Congo. Read the story and buy the whistle. Proceeds go to rehabilitate and advocate for war-affected children. Share their story and speak up for them.

Studio Portraits

I don’t get the chance to shoot in our studio that often. Here’s a couple shots from a really fun shoot the other day. Adam & Kristyn live in our neighborhood. So we bump into them when we’re out and about walking our dog and have gotten to know them over the years. They are SUCH a neat couple. So creating these timeless memories for them was a real joy for me.

One of the best investments I ever made for our studio was connecting all my Alien Bee strobes via the RadioPopper Jr. remotes. When working with a hyped up dog (you can see by that first image that it took Cami & Kristyn a while to calm down their beautiful Golden Retreiver, Sal!), you have to be able to move FAST! So when the hair light needs to be reduced and the main light needs more juice, being able to do that in the blink of an eye right there on the camera is a HUGE advantage! Fortunately Sal mellowed out and Dylan warmed up and we got some great images for them. J

Reuniting with Old Friends

It’s been many years now since I photographed Tim & Jeni’s wedding! But we continue to stay in touch. It’s so fun to reunite with clients I’ve been working with for so long that they’ve become my friends. I love seeing the changes in their lives and hear about their accomplishments since the last photo shoot. The big change in Jeni & Tim’s life is their beautiful new daughter, Emelia. J For this shoot they brought out the whole family, which was especially neat since I hadn’t seen some of them since their wedding!

ESPN Charleston Classic Action

All images were shot with available light using a pair of Nikon D3 bodies, 10.5mm fisheye, 14-24mm f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, and 200-400 f4.

Charleston Classic Celebrities

While covering the action for ESPN at the Charleston Classic, I grabbed a few…ahem…celebrity shots. OK, OK, my friend and colleague, Kathleen Cartland is talking to the only REAL celebrity, Bill Murray. But certainly celebrities to me include my friend and fellow shooter, Mic Smith, hanging his remote camera behind the backboard…Clay Hadden (in blue), who’s wonderful wedding to Lisa Sewell I photographed earlier this year…and Julia & Erik Loesch, who’s amazing destination wedding to St. Thomas we photographed last year! It’s always fun to bump into old friends at gatherings like this!!!

ESPN Charleston Classic

WOW! I have been SO SLACK about posting to the blog recently. Please forgive me…this time of year can be CRAZY around here!!! J

A few weeks ago I photographed the Charleston Classic again for ESPN. This will have been my 3^rd year on that assignment…it’s one I REALLY enjoy being a part of!!! Here are a few shots from the Welcome Reception held on the deck of The USS Yorktown. For anyone who’s ever been on this retired aircraft carrier at night, you know how awful the light is from those old sodium vapor tubes. The last thing I wanted was murky shadows and nasty green color casts on my skin tones. So I rigged up my trusty Radio Poppers on several SB-800/SB-900 flashes, strategically placed around the room to give me nice, clean, calibrated lighting everywhere I turned.

Studio Portrait for SCFCU

When we’re not shooting weddings and events on weekends, we photograph lots of head shots and executive portraits throughout the week. South Carolina Federal Credit Union has been sending their employees over to us for a couple years now. Jessica just joined their team and needed photos for a press release. This image was shot with a giant 6-foot LiteDome softbox to her left as the main light, a medium softbox behind and on her right as a kicker light, a small softbox on a boom above her for a hair light, and an SB-800 right behind her as a background light. I like using small wireless strobes as my background light since it’s wireless and I don’t have to worry about cables showing in the photo if I do a full-length shot. The rest of the light sources were Alien Bees, which are triggered with the RadioPopper Jr (Studio Version) radio triggers. The image was shot with a Nikon D2x (which I use exclusively in the studio), and the 70-200 f2.8.

Anchor Commercial

My “Double Your Pleasure” post about the team photos I did for ESPN got such a big response! So I thought I’d share this group photo I did last weak using the same technique. Anchor Commercial has been a client of ours for many years. One of the things they have me photograph for them each November is a group shot they put in a Christmas Card to send all their clients. Rather than setting up on the South East side of their building where they’d be squinting in to the morning sun, we decided to set up on the North West side. This provided a nice rim/back light. However, their faces were in extreme shadow. So I set up my double-flash technique with two SB-800s on each of two light stand, firing them through my favorite Westcott 43” Collapsible Umbrellas, and triggering them with my trusty RadioPoppers. Here’s the scene before everyone arrived, and the final image they selected for their card.

Double Your Pleasure

I used to love those Wrigley’s commercials…”Double your pleasure with double-mint gum”. J

At my workshops, one of the questions I get a lot is “how do you get enough power out of those little flashes for big groups”? Well, I double (or even triple) them up. I have a couple home-modified umbrella brackets that can hold 1, 2, or 3 flashes. Basically, a flash like an SB-800 puts out around 50 watt-seconds of power. So if you need more power, putting two together gives you 100ws, putting three together gives you 150. Another reason for ganging flashes together is so that you can use a lower power setting on each, thus increasing your recycle time AND extending how long you can go before replacing batteries.

This is my 3^rd year photographing the ESPN Charleston Classic. The event is kicked off with a huge Welcome Dinner on the hanger deck of The Yorktown, a decommissioned aircraft carrier. At the event, I have to photograph a group shot of each team. The first year, I brought my big AlienBee studio strobes. Well guess what I didn’t think of…wall outlets are EXTREMELY rare and hard to find on an aircraft carrier! The last two years, I’ve made life so much easier by using my wireless lighting system; no hunting for outlets…no McGyvering several extension chords together…no taping down cables.

I simply set up my light stands with two flashes in each, firing into a shoot-through umbrella for soft, even illumination. Each flash is set to around ¼ power and triggered via a RadioPopper. I’m using my D3 at iso 640, f5.6 for plenty depth of field, and 1/30 of a second for ambient light in the background. If you’re still using studio lights on location, I recommend doubling up your flashes. You’ll love the freedom of going wireless!

A Kiss of Light

I am, and always will be, a student of light! Most days I can find absolutely gorgeous natural light to work with. But sometimes a shot needs a little extra “something”. During this fun shoot with James & Ashleigh and their beautiful daughter, I started photographing this story-telling scene with all natural light. But the exposure value on Larkin was the same as James & Ashleigh’s. Even though the shallow depth of field made it clear that Larkin was my main subject, James & Ashleigh were competing for my attention. So to make them recede even more into the background and make Larkin really pop, I used a single SB-800 on my light stand off to my left to give her that extra lift. I didn’t pump it up too high…just enough to give her a little extra kiss of light and make her the true centerpiece of the shot. As always, the remote flash was triggered with a RadioPopper Px remote. Next time you’re out shooting, try adding a kiss of light to add extra depth to your shot!

Bass Harbor Lighthouse

Cami & I just walked in the door from a fantastic and relaxing week-long trek through scenic Maine. The LIGHTBENDING 411 WORKSHOP at the end of the week went great! But before I do a full write-up on that, I thought I’d post a few shots from our travels. We spent several days in Bar Harbor, taking in the hikes and views of Acadia National Park.

The first morning we were there I woke pre-dawn and drove to Bass Harbor Lighthouse to get a sun-rise shot. It was cold and windy. So I set my white-balance to a 4500K to draw out the cool tones and help evoke the mood of the morning. I have a wonderful Cokin graduated tobacco filter I like using for landscapes. But unfortunately I didn’t have it with me. So when I brought the image in to Adobe Lightroom, I created a Virtual Copy of the image, and processed the second one at a much warmer 7000K white balance. Combining the images in Adobe Photoshop allowed me to duplicate the effect of that graduated filter and brought back the natural color of the rocks while retaining the cool blue tone of the sky that I liked. I shot this in two vertical frames that were stitched together for the final image.

RadioPopper Goes to Romania

I have been a HUGE fan of RadioPoppers since they liberated me from the line-of-sight limitations of my Nikon Creative Lighting System. I absolutely LOVE the versatility, dependability, and control that the whole Nikon CLS flash system gives me. Extending all those qualities to HUNDREDS of feet instead of a couple dozen, and being able to place remote flashes around walls and behind subjects, all while maintaining full i-TTL functionality and high-speed-sync, truly allows me to bring my vision to life without any limitations.

This past July I traveled to Romania with a very compact lineup of gear that included a RadioPopper Px System. (To see some my other posts and photos from Romania, Click Here.) I have a couple of tricks I’ll share some day that allow me to attach the units in a more compact and streamlined manner to my flashes. This maximizes my opportunities and minimizes set-up, tear-down, and excess space in my camera bag…especially important while doing run-n-gun street-level travel assignments like this!

In spite of the different radio frequencies floating around most of Eastern Europe, I had absolutely no problems with interference. My RadioPoppers worked every time and made for some really dramatic shots that never would have been possible without them! Kathy & Rusty's family at Folly Beach

I had a really fun time photographing Shelley, Chris, and their son Logan last year. So I was ecstatic when her Mom called to ask me to photograph the WHOLE family. J It was so beautiful, peaceful, and un-crowded out on my favorite stretch of Folly Beach. One of the joys of my job is getting to know folks as we walk to and from the beach…hearing about all the interesting things they do, their amazing accomplishments, their passions, and what’s important in their lives. Alison & Kevin at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian

Alison & Kevin had a GORGEOUS ceremony last Saturday! The sky was blue, the temperature was perfect, and Alison & Kevin were a BLAST to hang out with!!!

I met up with them at Alhambra Hall where the wedding party was getting ready. Kevin & Alison shared their “First Glance” shortly after that, giving us time to get some fun wedding party photos before heading to the church. Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian has a beautiful historic sanctuary that I love photographing in. We always obey each church’s protocol, even if it means no photography inside the sanctuary during the worship service. But I was kindly allowed to polish the glass windows at the back to shoot through them from the foyer, and also mount my fisheye remote camera on the balcony for some unique shots.

After the ceremony, Alison & Kevin burst from the church to an excited gathering of friends and family clapping and blowing bubbles as they rode off on their horse-drawn carriage. The reception followed at the always-popular Alhambra Hall. It was an EXCITING party with lots of laughter, emotional toasts, crazy dancing, and a beautiful sunset for some of my favorite shots of the day. Later, a full moon rose in time for me to grab a couple dramatic images before Alison & Kevin made their grand escape among waving multi-colored glow sticks. What a FANTASTIC day!

Patricia & Michael at Summerall Chapel

Last weekend Tricia & Mike tied the knot at Summerall Chapel on The Citadel! Their reception followed at the Carolina Yacht Club in downtown Charleston.

Tricia is a 1^st Grade teacher…and we all know I have a big heart for teachers since my parents were educational missionaries and still teach even now that they are retired! Mike traveled a lot since his Dad was a contractor for the Army… Guam, Puerto Rico, and all over the US. So we had a lot in common too. But what really struck me about these two is just how much IN LOVE they are! J I could tell they were close during their engagement session. But even on their wedding day, with all the secret letters and gifts going back and forth…Tricia & Mike are soul mates indeed! I love the story of how Mike proposed. After picking out her ring all on his own, he planned a really amazing proposal at Waterfront Park as they watched their first sunrise together, then arranged to meet ALL their family and friends that he had secretly invited to join them for breakfast afterwards. Isn’t that cool?!?

Product Photography

Although I primarily showcase our wedding/portrait work on here, we photograph a wide variety of subjects and genres. So I thought I’d write a post about a fun shoot I did for healer Ayal Hurst the other day. She’s a long-time client of ours and so full of positive energy. It’s always a pleasure working with her. Plus she’s a fellow artist, designing and creating beautiful jewelry and truly unique paintings with depth and dimension like you’ve never seen before! Her and her husband also run a very peaceful Bed No Breakfast downtown.

When photographing Products and art, it’s important to use feathering techniques to prevent hotspots. Feathering the light means not pointing it directly at your subject, but aiming it such that just the softer “edge” of the light source illuminates the product. Here I used a soft-box with 2 SB-800 strobes coming in from the right. Feathering gave me “almost” even illumination across the camera plane. But I added an umbrella with a single SB-800 from the left to fill in and further even out the exposure. All strobes were triggered by an SB-900 Commander on my D3, pointed backwards AWAY from the painting so as not to create any glare, and controlled via RadioPoppers.

Light Bending 411 Encore

I’ve been getting such WONDERFUL feedback from the Wireless Lighting Workshops I’ve been teaching. THANK YOU to everyone that has participated and made it such a success. I’ll be teaching my “Light Bending 411” course again on November 6^th! I’ve been asked by The Aroostook F-Stops, an extremely active photography club in northern Maine, to come do a full-day program for them. The club’s fearless leader, Tom, has been so organized and fun to work with. His wife is a fellow alumni from The American School of Kinshasa (TASOK)…so we’ll have lots of catching up to do! Since Cami spent several summers in Maine and has many fond memories from this beautiful part of the country, we’ll be going up early and taking some much anticipated R&R. We’ll fly into Portland and wind our way up to Aroostook, hiking and sightseeing in places like Acadia National Park, and staying in quaint B&B’s along the way. I’m truly excited and look forward to sharing my enthusiasm with these wonderfully talented photographers in Maine!!!

Boone Hall Family Shoot

I met Holly while shooting assignments for her at the Charleston Regional Business Journal. We’ve been friends ever since and I’ve had the pleasure of photographing her and Clint’s family for several years. Originally it was just their 4-legged kids, now they have a beautiful 2-legged one too. J We met at the historic Boone Hall Plantation just down the road from their house. The early morning light was just perfect and we had a great time roaming the grounds and stopping for different shots. At one point, when I had everyone set, including 2-dogs and a 1-year old girl, this huge (think grayhound) bus slowly wanders down the famous Avenue of Oaks that was my backdrop…and proceeded to stop right behind us to let it’s FULL contents of elderly tourists out behind us!!! How inconsiderate was that? They could have just as easily pulled up 15 feet closer to the mansion and been out of our shot! But that’s the fun of working in a public environment. We rolled with the punches, moved on to a new spot, and came back to that one after everyone had dispersed.

Tamarae & David at Fort Johnson Baptist

Tamarae & David finally tied the knot last weekend after about 6 years together. They met freshman year at George Mason, where Tamarae may or may not have stalked David until he made her his girlfriend. J She is such a bubbly, fun-loving extrovert, has a flare for the dramatic, and enjoys drama and art. While he is quiet and reserved…that is until you get to REALLY know him. He sings, writes music, and plays in a band. In fact, he recorded and sang the song they did their first dance to. They complement each other so well. Which made their wedding day a true joy for me to be a part of!

The wedding was held at the gorgeous Fort Johnson Baptist Church. Afterwards we went downtown for a fun photo shoot, where they were picked up by Palmetto Carriage for a quiet ride to the historic Francis Marion Hotel for their reception. I got to work with some of my favorite vendors, including Jeff Bradt Video, Cakes by Kasarda, Jay Maxwell’s Music by Request, the Mike Wolk Jazz Group, Seithel’s Florist, and of course the fabulous Caroline Bean from the Francis Marion. Tamarae’s dress came from Blush, the bridesmaids dresses were from the amazing LulaKate, and the gentleman were outfitted at Berlin’s Tuxedos. Everything went as smooth as could be. Robbin & Leighanne at Folly Beach

Yesterday Cami & I did a fun “Dual Photo Shoot” with our good friends Robbin & Leighanne of Robbin Knight Photography! We went out to Folly Beach where we took turns photographing each other for our respective Christmas Card photos. First Robbin & Leighanne would set Cami & I up with our golden retriever, Marley, and photograph us. Then we’d do the same for their family. It was a BLAST and we had a lot of fun trading who was shooting, who was watching “the kids”, and who was playing with the squeaky toy. Afterwards we took the dogs, the kids, and our tired selves to a dog-friendly restaurant on the island and had a great time relaxing on the patio with the cool evening breeze and wonderful conversation. Here’s a couple of my favorites of the Knight gang. You’ll have to wait until Christmas to see ours!!! J

Jessie & Phil at DeBordieu Colony

It was a peaceful, sunny drive to Pawley’s Island last weekend to photograph Jessie & Phil’s wedding. I first met Jessie & Phil at Julie & Howie’s wedding last year where they were guests. We hit it off right away partly because Jessie is the owner of Pawley Paws Grooming & Supplies and loves animals as much as Cami & I do.

They met each other through Howie and mutual friends. After dating for a while, Jessie took Phil with her on an annual trip to visit her friends in New Jersey. They all knew she was serious about him when she did that. But they had no idea Phil had plans of his own…he asked her to marry him that weekend! J As they say, the rest is history. The amazing pair were married at the picturesque Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church. And their reception was held at the gorgeous DeBordieu Colony Beach Club. Blossoms Events provided the beautiful bouquets and floral arrangements. Incredible Edibles created a fabulous wedding cake. Cape Fear Photo Booth company brought lots of fun entertainment. And the Triple Lindy Band, one of my favorite for sure, filled the air with foot-stompin’ tunes all night long! Moody Air Force Base

Monday I had a really neat opportunity to use my Creative Lighting System. The amazing folks at TranSystems, who I’d done a similar shoot for at Shaw AFB, called to ask if I’d be willing to drive to Moody AFB in Valdosta, GA for this one. Turns out they are up for an incredible award due to the efficiency and “green” design of this new dorm building. I was honored and jumped at the opportunity. I photographed all day, doing lots of Interior/Architectural images in and around the property. But of course the “money shot” was going to be at dusk. This was the last frame of the night. I had a total of 8 - SB800/SB900 flashes blazing. Each had a ½ CTO filter on it. Most were triggered by my trusty RadioPoppers (though the closer ones just used regular old line-of-sight CLS). I shot this about 20 minutes after sunset with a Nikon D3 and 14-24 f2.8 at 14mm. By the time I’d packed up and headed home, it was a very long but rewarding day!

Mihaela & Vicintiu's Romania Wedding

Yesterday I had the pleasant surprise of a wonderful phone call from Mihaela, who’s wedding to Vicintiu I photographed in Romania back in July. She was in the US visiting friends and family. I was so honored that she would take the time to reach out and thank me again for being a part of their wedding! What a sweetheart!!!

So I thought I’d post a few photos from their gorgeous day. I have to say, this was by far the most surreal wedding I have ever had the privilege of photographing! It was on a beautiful, pristine, mountainside near Campulung. A light afternoon shower had cleansed the landscape and brought a crisp freshness to the air. A dreamy mist was rising from the valley below. And we weren’t alone…wild horses had also discovered the picturesque meadow we were in. They pranced and played in the background throughout the service. Then just as magically as they appeared…wandered off to an adjoining hill side just before we left. It was one of those serendipitous experiences I’ll never forget for as long as I live.

Congratulations again to “Miha & Vic”. Always remember the magic moments of your life!!!

Charleston Photographers Lunch Group

I always enjoy organizing the monthly get-togethers for the Charleston Photographers Lunch Group. For September, we met at Iacofonos Deli in Mt. Pleasant. This is also where JLI Catering is located. The beautiful Meredith from JLI Catering brought out several AMAZING appetizers for everyone to sample. I highly recommend checking them out to cater your next event! My new friend and fellow photographer, Bob Mule, took this image of one of the tables. We had a great time!!!

Kelly & Christopher at First Baptist Church

As the doors slowly opened, a hushed reverence fell over the sanctuary where everyone had gathered to share in the uniting of Kelly & Christopher. Their eyes locked. And as I quietly captured each of their expressions, I knew in my heart that I was witnessing a public profession of true love this day! Kelly & Christopher were married at the First Baptist Church. Between the beautiful colors of the bridesmaids dresses and the bouquets, the intimate moments between father and daughter, mother and son, husband and wife, all the rich historic backdrops of downtown Charleston, and the burst of drama while photographing these two in their first sunset as a married couple, I felt like I was being handed beautiful image after beautiful image. Jim & Re befriended us back when we all attended Ashley River Baptist together. Jim and I are big geeks, so we have lots in common. Re is quite the artist and a big photo buff. Plus we have several mutual friends in common…like the amazing Nathan Bell, and wonderfully talented James Riley. A few days ago we did a little walk-about at Waterfront Park and I photograph some shots of their handsome son and beautiful daughter. We had an AWESOME time catching up and creating images of their kids. J
